Traditions
Saturday is traditionally spent decorating Easter
eggs and hunting for them with children on Sunday morning, by which time
they have been mysteriously hidden all over the house and garden.
Other traditions involve parents telling their children that
eggs and other treats such as chocolate eggs or rabbits, and marshmallow chicks
(Peeps), have been delivered by the Easter Bunny in an Easter basket,
which children find waiting for them when they wake up.
Many families participate in a feast or party such as a
traditional Sunday roast, often of either roast lamb or ham.
To celebrate Easter, millions of children around the world
will await the arrival of a mythical bunny to deliver them candy-filled
eggs.
Wait. What's that now?
According to the University of Florida’s Center for
Children’s Literature and Culture, tradition has it that a little girl happened
upon an injured bird and prayed for help. Magically, the bird turned into a
rabbit -- promising the child that, for her good deed, it would return once a
year to bring rainbow colored eggs.
By the 1950s, the Easter bunny truly became a cultural
fixture with the release of the Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins song "Peter
Cottontail" which topped the pop charts and later served as the
inspiration for children's books, cartoons, and comics.
May you have a wonderful Easter!
